Toucan too good for Mieco Beach fleet
For the second race in a row, the yacht Toucan, skippered by Tom Sauer, took
out last Sunday’s 11-mile Mieco Beach Yacht Club race with a corrected time
of 1 hour, 21 minutes and 24 seconds.
Toucan was competing against seven other yachts that left the safety of
their moorings and ventured onto a blustery lagoon to take part in the
watery competition. On board their boats were scores of volunteer crew eager
to learn the art of moving with the wind.
Second place went to the catamaran Freebird (Dave Howell), and third to
trimaran Windswept (Richard Barrie), the largest boat in the fleet. Other
boats competing for a swag of great prizes were Blue Moon (Rob Woollacott),
Bohica (Lee Graber), Karmaladen (Rixzene Ayers), Seal (Cary Evarts), and
Aquila (Frans Nooij).
During the race Aquila lost use of its rudder, forcing Nooij to switch to
auto-pilot, and had this not happened, crew member and club commodore
Richard Hickson reckoned “we would have won.”
After the wet ride, the skippers and crew adjourned to the clubhouse (the
Marshall Islands Resort) for the prize-giving ceremony. Goodies on offer
included a drum of diesel from MEC, accommodation at the resort, gift
certificates from EZ Prize Mart and XXXX from RRE.
The club’s next event will be Tuesday Tales on January 10, while the next
race will be Sunday, January 15, with the skipper’s meeting at the resort on
the Friday before.
