A hotly-contested event
By Karen Earnshaw
The first six place-getters in last Sunday's Mieco Beach Yacht Club race all
finished within 10 minutes of each other on corrected time, making it a
hotly-contested event.
Nine cruising yachts had planned to take part in the fourth race of the
season, but one pulled out early in the day due to a bug of the coughing
kind, which, given the wind and drizzle, was no doubt a good thing.
First place on corrected time went to a veteran of the Majuro lagoon race
course: Richard Barrie on board the trimaran Windswept.
Second place — just one minute and 54 seconds behind — was taken by Seal,
skippered by Cary Evarts, third by Ka Pai (Richie Rigg), fourth by Sequester
(Ted Cary), fifth by Ke Ama II (Philip Johnston), and sixth by Po'Oino Roa
(Kathy McGraw).
Ke-Ama II and the seventh boat Moonbird (Ken Taggart), which did not finish,
were welcome newcomers to MBYC racing.
At the after-race ceremony at the Marshall Islands Resort, commodore Liz
Rodick thanked all skippers and crews, including those on board the Royal
Australian Navy's True Blue, which is the start and chase boat.
