A RACE TO REMEMBER

Seven skippers and their crews braved winds that gusted up to 30 knots to compete in the Mieco Beach Yacht Club¹s fifth race of the season on Sunday afternoon.

And, proving that size doesn¹t necessarily count, Marc Men-delson¹s yacht Tauranga (pictured at right being dwarfed by the mega-yacht Takapuna) powered around the course to take first place on corrected time.
Second place in the blustery competition went to Roxanne, skippered by Tom Petty, and third to Blue Moon (Rob Woollacott).

Also out on the course were the yachts Takapuna (Michael Dailey), Seal (Cary Evarts), Stella (Terry Forsbrey), and Sailfish (Jaki Leppard), which sailed with an all-woman crew.

In Commodore Richard Hickson¹s absence, founding club member Liz Rodick emceed the awards ceremony at the "club house" (the Marshall Islands Resort) on Sunday evening, giving out a ton of prizes that included accommodation at the resort, diesel from MEC, chairs from Budweiser and a gift certificate from Ace Hardware.

The next race on the club¹s calendar is the Coconut Cup Regatta on Saturday, April 9. While that race is independent of the Mieco Beach Yacht Club, the boats' times will be taken and added to the season's standings.
