Nine yachts braved the wet and windy waters of Majuro lagoon on Sunday
afternoon to take part in the Mieco Beach Yacht Club race.
The day started out with absolutely no wind and ended with blustery
conditions that blew out two sails and sank at least one dinghy.
Line honors went to the speedy yacht Roxanne, but the big winner on
corrected time was Joe and Kay McCarthy’s yacht Navi-Gator. Second place
went to the yacht Windrunner and third to Seal.
Following the race, Commodore Dee Johnson hosted a boisterous awards
ceremony at the Outrigger’s Jakaro Bar with the yacht Queen Jane, skippered
by Jordan Bigel, taking out the treasured free night at the resort, and
Windrunner the 55 gallons of diesel donated by MEC. Other sponsors included
Budweiser, EZ Price, and MIVA.
The yacht club is now coming of age, with over 40 members and more people
eager to crew on the yachts.
New members that have signed up recently include MEC head honcho Billy
Roberts, WorldTeach’s Pat Lane, and Majuro Hospital’s Judy Sleath.
The next big event for the yacht club will be the coordinating of the yacht
division in the Seventh Annual Coconut Cup Regatta, which is being held on
Saturday, March 27.
