Roxanne leads the lagoon race pack
Tom Petty’s super-fast yacht Roxanne took out line honors and first place on
corrected time in last Sunday’s Mieco Beach Yacht Club race on Majuro
lagoon.
Roxanne rocketed around the 10.1 mile course in one hour and 28 minutes,
beating the second-place boat by over 30 minutes to the finish line off the
Marshall Islands Resort.
Six international cruising yachts took part in the race, with second place
going to Blue Moon skippered by Rob Woollacott, third to Navi-Gator (Joe
McCarthy), fourth to Stella (Terry Forsbrey) fifth to Seal (Cary Evarts),
and sixth to 2nd Tri (John Jones).
Club race committee member Ira Hecht supervised the race, which was held in
a healthy breeze of about 15 knots.
The yachts all had on board a number of ‘temporary crew’, mostly made up of
volunteer teachers and the crews of other boats not racing on the day.
Roxanne, however, won the unofficial kids’ award with a boat load of excited
young individuals enjoying the day out.
After Sunday’s race, the skippers and crew met at the resort for the awards
ceremony emceed by club commodore Richard Hickson.
He merrily doled out the race prizes, which turned out to be a ton of
goodies from club sponsors including the Marshall Islands Resort, Marshalls
Energy Company, EZ Price Mart, RRE Hotel, and Ace Hardware.
The club’s next event will be the now regular Tuesday Tales at RRE’s Boknake
on February 1, with the next race tentatively scheduled for Sunday, February
13.
