Yacht Hawkeye trounced the MBYC fleet
By Karen Earnshaw
Four yachts and the EZ WAM canoe battled 25 to 30 knots of wind to sail
around the shortened course, with the start off the Marshall Islands Resort.
Normally the fleet is run with two divisions: Monohulls and multihulls.
"This time we started the yachts and the canoe together," reported race
controller Jerry McGraw of the yacht Po'Oino Roa. "Doing this, which was my
idea, almost created a disaster. There was a narrow miss of a collision
between the canoe and Ursa Minor, but they didn't hit and were never truly
within five feet of each other."
Later in the race, the canoe broke some of its gear and had to pull out.
"Skipper Ken Taggart said he was watching the speed of the canoe on his GPS
as it climbed up from 14 knots, but on reaching 14.4 knots, something came
apart," McGraw said. "The canoe was assisted back by Spike Jackson on
Holokai and Ted Cary on Sequester."
