Brewer wins race
Sail into Majuro one week and take out line honors and first place on
corrected time in the Mieco Beach Yacht Club the next! Quite a feat from
skipper Tony Brewer, who is reportedly a keen club racer in his home town in
New Zealand.
Seven boats took part in the blustery third race of the club’s season last
Sunday, with lots of spectators gathering at the Weather Station to watch
the pre-race maneuvers at 12:30pm.
On corrected time, the first five placings were all within eight minutes of
each other, with second place going to Navi-Gator, skippered by Joe
McCarthy, who had a squad of willing volunteers to help crew the boat to
stardom.
Third place went to Aquila (Frans Nooij), fourth to Toucan (Tom Sauer, the
winner of the previous two races), fifth to Pegasus (Gary Stephens), and
sixth to Blue Moon (Rob Woollacott). The yacht Seal (Cary Evarts), had to
retire from the race after a good start was spoiled by a seam splitting on
the yacht’s mainsail.
The next race is tentatively planned to be held on Sunday, February 19
(watch this space), with the skipper’s meeting at the clubhouse (Marshall
Islands Resort) on the Friday evening before.
On Tuesday evening, the club held its annual general meeting, with Richard
Hickson being re-elected as commodore and Liz Rodick as vice commodore.
The next event on the club’s calendar will be its now regular monthly
Tuesday Tales, which will be held at 5:30pm on February 7.
